It's about humanizing the victim from now on (and about someone else humanizing the aggressor), not about torturing the aggressor (or the victim for complaining).
One real evil overreach is the idea that a punishment-- for anything, including having murdered someone-- needs to or should be or include or involve some type or level of torture in order to be a fitting punishment or in order to work.
This includes physical, emotional, psychological, or spiritual/religious torture. From any type of abuse at all.
Real recompense is not about the abuser, or about gaslighting/subtly or subconsciously shaming the victim to "help them move on" either.
Real recompense is about the victim deserving better, not about the aggressor deserving worse. About the victim's well being, not that of the aggressor. And about love and establishing more respect, not about focusing on the abuser when it's at the victim's expense. Then all that hate ends up getting often blamed on the victim because "Oh, you need to stop complaining now, you're hurting MY mental health, enough is enough." If you are a real friend of the victim then you won't blame the victim for depressing you; you will blame the abuser's crap for it... and keep listening to the victim and lifting them up by reminding them they always deserved better and that they'll get that better from you, since you're their friend, that they never got from their aggressor... rather than either blaming the victim or feeling the victim is or is acting pathetic.
